Who we talked to
BRIAN BARTLETT,
CLIENT ADVISOR
DOUG JACKSON, OWNER
JAY WOLFF,
GENERAL MANAGER
Do you specialize in any type or brand of bicycle?
“For cruisers, our
brands are Electra
and Nirve. We also
carry Trek.”
“I have two top brands:
Trek and Specialized.”
“Trek, Cannondale, Santa
Cruz and Electra cruisers.”
What will you do to help find the bike that’s right for your customers?
“We go through an
interview process to
find what they’re looking
to do with the bike.”
“Size people up and put
them in the right bike,
which is half of the job.”
“We do custom fittings
with fitting machines
in the store.”
What’s the biggest mistake people make when buying a bike?
“Not spending
enough money. They
go cheap.”
“They underestimate what
a good, quality bike is
going to cost them.”
“A lot of people come in
because they want a color.”
How much does the average person spend on a bike?
“Probably $300
to $500.”
“Around here, probably
$350 to $400.”
“Probably $400.”
Why buy from a bike shop instead of a big-box store?
“The people that work
here know about the
sport and products.
At big-box stores, the
bikes are subpar as far
as quality is concerned.”
“Big-box stores have
bikes that aren’t
professionally assembled
and serviced.”
“You’re going to get
much better attention and
a higher-quality product.
We’re bike people.”
What kinds of regular maintenance do you offer? How much does each service cost?
“Basic tuneups cost
$55. We offer a free
basic tuneup with a
purchase of a
new bike.”
“We give one year of free
service with a new bike.
The first tuneup for
your bike is the most
important one.”
“We offer one year of
free adjustments [with
a new bike]. It’s
$45 for a tuneup.”
What is the best local bike path? Why is it your favorite?
“My personal favorite
is the bike path that
goes around the
Newport Back Bay.
It’s not as crowded.”
“The Verdugos, right above
Glendale or Burbank, is a
little string of mountains.
It has fire roads and trails.”
“A road ride up Mandeville
Canyon. It’s a fairly
short climb, but it’s
through a beautiful
neighborhood.”
