reporting by Shelly Bucksot
We sent our Comp Shopper out to ask three professional exterminators to tell us an itsy bitsy about their businesses. Here’s what hatched.

What tips do you have for preventing pests and insects
from invading the home?
“Proper sanitation is the key. Pests are always looking for food, water and shelter. If you provide any of those, you’re inviting them into your home.”
“Prevent moisture inside and outside the home, i.e. broken downspouts or leaky faucets. Seal windows to reduce condensation.”
“Store firewood away from the
house. Keep garbage outside
instead of in a garage. Keep trees
trimmed so they don’t touch
the house, and keep mulch off
of any wood siding.”
Describe the worst insect or pest infestation you’ve encountered.
“I walked into an apartment that
was totally infested with roaches
— they were literally falling off
the ceiling.”
“[Once], before I even rang the doorbell, I could smell the roaches inside — a combination of urine and rotting food. When I opened the door, roaches were crawling in the hinges and falling from the ceiling.”
“I got a call from a woman last
week who said everything was
fine when she went to bed, but
in the middle of the night, a car-
penter ant nest moved into her
bedroom. She woke up to more
than 7,000 ants crawling around.”
